A recent project I’ve worked on included the Hypixel Housing Update. As part of the Hypixel Player Council (HPC), I was able to help with the direction of this update.
Hypixel Housing
Hypixel Housing is a gamemode released September 2015 on the Hypixel Minecraft server. Since then, it has stayed as a relatively popular mode, usually maintaining around 1000 concurrent players during higher overall player count on the server. During peak hours it can be the third most popular mode on the server only behind Bedwars and Skywars. https://hytrack.me/ is a tool made by @Connor Linfoot you can use to watch the player activity on the network.
For about 3 years housing remained in beta. The issues with housing are highlighted in this thread. There have been a scattering of updates in the systems that run housing but content updates were not included. In October 2018 housing was finally removed from beta and underwent a major backend change. With the backend code rewritten to host players on one server per house instead of having an instance for each player, it became much easier to progress with promised features. Read about it here.
Thousands of possibilities but only so much time- deciding what should be prioritized is an important decision. Being on HPC this is something I was able to help with. Maintaining discretion with information disclosed to me is very important; however, I can give some insight into what I was able to help with. Some of my tasks included testing for and documenting bugs (steps to reproduce and state of progress fixing it) and brainstorming ideas for content. Because of the housing code being older, it’s more difficult to update than our newer games but the admins working on it did incredible jobs and I enjoyed working with them. Check out the results in this thread.
Thanks for reading my first blog post.
