Last Saturday was a long day for the karaoke team. Personally, I woke up at 8:00am to help out and for a person who likes to sleep past noon it was rough. It was totally worth it though when ended up with over 40 people at each karaoke event and around 1000 visits to the housing lobby. This didn’t happen without a lot of planning and work though, and I’d like to highlight the work that went into making it such a success.
Hypixel Karaoke has been around for a long time and gone through many changes. Karaoke Housing has been in the works for many, many months since it’s a very necessary way to gain attention to our event. Before it was hosted in a leaders’ house but that didn’t allow us full control over the plot to maximize the efficiency of our goals. Using a dedicated plot gives us the control we needed.
The building we released is just a fraction of what we plan to release as the finished house but it still took us time and focus. We started building, not with blocks, but with plans. What was our goal and how can we achieve it with the space and blocks in Minecraft? This was the first question we had to answer. We decided we wanted an area that was informative but not overly wordy which led us to use two floors. By putting the information boards on the second floor we didn’t bombard people who had just entered. Words and signs just aren’t attractive. Another feature we wanted was an activity like a maze or parkour. Since our above-ground space was limited a maze was a better option because of unlimited underground space.
Once the blueprint was done we could start actually building our lobby space which was the fun part. I love using creativity to achieve goals. This was accomplished easily and quickly. Lastly was creating the information we wanted to get across which was difficult to fit into the 15 character space limit imposed by Minecraft signs. The biggest issue was finding a domain that would fit! Our new home site- HPKaraoke.me fit on signs and gives all the relevant information needed to get people to our events. Finally, the day came where we were going to release it. As the main event planner, I came up with a schedule that allowed the team to be prepared for the 4 events of the day. It was an “all hands on deck” type of day and for around 10 hours I was focused on karaoke (with a quick walk to the store for free chocolate). All this work paid off in the end. We had the highest rate of participation in a long time and several new people join our discord.
